Strengthening Community Health Care
In the United States, inner cities and rural areas have gaps in community healthcare similar to the developing world. These gaps lead to disparate health outcomes for low-income, immigrant and minority populations. These gaps also increase the overall cost of healthcare delivery as untreated/inadequately treated medical conditions worsen and become more expensive to treat later on.
Community health centers (CHCs) play a vital role filling these gaps by serving as the medical home for low-income patients. They provide medically underserved communities with high quality, affordable primary and preventative health care. They improve access to care for patients regardless of their ability to pay. This cost effective, community-based care reduces the need for more expensive hospital and specialty care, and has the potential to save taxpayers billions of dollars annually.
WHITIA helps to build capacity within these safety net providers by helping them to access low cost, essential health technologies including X-ray and telemedicine. WHITIA also helps them to build relationships that they can use for medical consultations.
